Discussion and Reading Journal
The Masque of the Red Death
The implied reader in the story is a resident of the fantasy world that the writer focuses on. For instance the author says “But first let me tell of the rooms in which it was held…” this implies that he assumes that the reader can picture the scene as a resident of the fantasy world. However, when reading this text, the actual reader does not belong to the fantasy world implied and can only relate to the story externally.
In this text, the author wanted the actual reader to relate to the world and discover the dangers of the disease. He wished that the reader could know how to deal with an outbreak as the prince did. The work effectively fit the picture of how life is even from an external perspective.
