Muscle Cells

Tobacco reduces the oxygen availability to muscle cells during exercise. Carbon monoxide contained in tobacco smoke has a higher affinity to hemoglobin than does oxygen (Owing 4). Smoking causes oxygen depletion by leading to replacement of oxygen with carbon monoxide and a corresponding reduction in performance. Muscle growth is diminished when the amount of oxygen available to the muscle cells is reduced. Nicotine can also act as a stimulant and relaxant for skeletal muscles and enhances tension in other muscles (Owing 10). Smoking also reduces appetite which leads to poor growth and development of muscles.
