History of Black Women in Film Production

Black women have been discriminated against for centuries. In fact, in the film industry it has been difficult for African-American actresses to join the industry and rise to higher positions such as producers. However, some black women have broken the biggest barrier of racial discrimination to rise to the top. For instance, Stephanie Allian Bray built her career by being focused and studying creative writing in college, which is easily applied in the film industry. In addition, she ignored the fact that film production was a male dominated field and mostly considered a territory for white people (Guerrero, 2012).

Notably, Allain worked hard to promote black actors in the film industry. Even though she was a black woman, she managed to work her way up from a script reader to a producer in different companies. As a result, she helped pioneer the careers of several black film makers such as Robert Rodriguez and John Singleton. Also, she became a role model to many young black girls aspiring to be actresses and producers (Reid, 2003).
