To prepare for this Discussion students are to review Unit 5 and 6.  Students should select at least three questions to answer.

Question #1

The period after the Civil War was known as Reconstruction.  Why did Americans consider this a reconstructive period?  How did this period effect the South?  Discuss the role of slaves, who are now called freedmen.  What was their role during this time?  What other changes occurred during this time in America? How did the 13th, 14th, or 15th amendment impact their lives?

Discuss the challenges or achievements that the newly freed slaves encountered after the Civil War.  Based upon the reading, do you believe that Reconstruction was successful?  Please explain why or why not.

Question #3

Discuss your understanding of the American involvement in World War I.  What were the origins of this conflict and what lead to the American involvement?  What was the initial policy of the U.S. before the War?  What changed this policy?

After reading lessons 20-21 and watching the films, discuss the role of the following during the War and the impact each group had on the war.  Select at least two nations listed below and your understanding of their role during World War I.  What impact or involvement did these nations have on the war?

Reconstruction Period

1.The period after the civil wars was known as the reconstruction period as it was the period that the Americans were rebuilding their country and reinstating the infrastructure that had been destroyed during the period of war.it focused on the southern states as it was directed by the Congress to reconstruct the society and the state. During this period, the blacks got a voice in the government and the southern states elected them to the congress. The new southern state legislature made a resolution on black codes that were to control the behavior of the former slaves, control the labor of all the African Americans (Merritt 23).

2. During the reconstruction period, the slave marriages were recognized legally. At this time many freed slaves got married officially. They could not enter into any type of contract before emancipation. However not all the freed slaves formalize their unions but their unions still remained recognized. The freed slaves faced major problems in settling down in the lives after slavery but generally, the reconstruction was successful. Most of the African Americans and other lacks in America got their basic rights back. They were now allowed to interact with other people freely.
